IMPROVING ACESS TO EDUCATION FOR UNDERPRIVILEDGED GIRLS  IN URBAN SLUMS OF WESTERN UTTAR PRADESH

Western Uttar Pradesh despite being a highly industrialized and agricultural zone, sees a lot of disparity in terms of deprivation for minority communities. Poverty and Child Labour are rampant and further cultural barriers prevent girls from education.

With a view to change this situation the project consortium of Islamic Relief Worldwide and Grassroots India Trust designed and initiated a project titled “Improving Education Amongst Underprivileged Communities in Urban Poverty Zones of Western Uttar Pradesh (hereinafter referred as IEUPC Education Project)” since March 2009 focusing the girl child education in Meerut, Moradabad and Aligarh cities. The project is supported by the European Commission and jointly implemented through OFFER India.

APPROACH

To complement and contribute to the SSA, by mobilising key stakeholders, establishing community education committees and alternative education units and strengthening formal education structures to help increase access, support mainstreaming; improve retention levels and completion of schooling by children, particularly girl’s, from disadvantaged minority communities living in 3 urban districts of Western Uttar Pradesh.

The orphanages face shortage of funds due to this. And this directly affects their maintenance and living conditions. Sanitation and hygiene is very poor, and the quality of food and utensils is bad. The children are also not getting proper care due to lack of funds.

Objectives

Overall Objective:
Contributing to MDG 2 & 3, the overall objective of the project is to close the educational access gap and increase school completion rates by children from disadvantaged minority communities - with a particular focus on girl’s education within urban areas of Western Uttar Pradesh.
